Learning the Art of the Siesta

Michael and I have never been big on taking naps. Don’t get me wrong, we liked the idea of naps but we usually didn’t have time to take a nap. In Mexico, our schedule has completely changed and on most days it includes a siesta.image

According to Wikipedia, a siesta is a short nap taken in the early afternoon, often after the midday meal. Such a period of rest is a common tradition in the Mediterranean and Southern Europe, Spain and Hispanic American countries. We are happy about that because we will spend much time in these places.

We are blaming our new-found fondness for taking a siesta on the weather (it is very humid here), too many tortillas (we are certainly enjoying the Mexican food) and the lack of a car (we are walking several miles each day to get from here to there). Oh, and according to Michael he is completely worn out from school.

Sometimes our siesta includes sleeping and sometimes it is just finding a cool place to rest and read but whatever form it takes we look forward to it each day.

Michael says his favorite yoga pose is the Corpse Pose.

Michael says his favorite yoga pose is the Corpse Pose and he practices it each afternoon.

  1. Hola Amigos, Tina and Michael,
Since I don’t hike or camp (hotels and fine restaurants are more to my liking), it’s fun to “rough” it vicariously through you! I like the way you say you’ll be gone 12 months or maybe 18 months. You’re true vagabonds. Gracias for this link. I look forward to traveling the world with you.

  2. Mike is funny! Sounds like you two are having lots of fun. I’m pretty excited to hear about your adventure. Good luck and be safe.
