Mexico!

Our first six weeks has flown past very quickly! Mexico is behind us as we travel to Guatemala. We have enjoyed Mexico very much, it is a great place to tour. With over 3,000 miles behind us, we stayed in big cities (Guadalajara and Mexico City) and small towns (San Cristobal and Palenque). We went to language school, took city tours, visited ruins (lots and lots of ruins), toured the tequila region, took a jet boat ferry to the Isla Mujeras, took two airplane rides and nine long bus rides (4 to 11 hours each), ate and drank like we are on permanent vacation (oh yeah we are!) and met many great people (both locals and other travelers).

We finished up Mexico in Cancun. What can I say about Cancun that has not already been said in travel magazines… it’s expensive, it’s hot and humid, it’s full of Americans and Canadians and it’s expensive and hot. We did not stay long and were anxious to move on. The Cancun we saw does not represent the Mexico we came to know over six weeks. It didn’t help that Michael and I both ended up sick this week. We caught colds and have been fighting sore throats, coughs and runny noses. We have both been feeling sluggish and look forward to feeling better. The good news is that we otherwise have not been sick.

We came to the sad conclusion that we will not be going to Cuba right now. It was a hard decision and we have gone back and forth on what to do several times but finally took the bus to Chetumal, Mexico on the border with Belize to put an end to the discussion. We still have Cuba in our travel plans but during a better time of the year when the weather is not so hot and humid. Through most of Mexico it has been warm and a little humid but not to the point where we couldn’t cope with it. When we got to the coast city of Merida we really started to feel the heat and humidity. In Cancun we spent our days searching for air conditioning and it was available in our room, in restaurants and shops. In Cuba there is very little air conditioning available and we did not want to spend the money and waste the opportunity.

So Mexico, “thank you, its been great” and Guatemala here we come!

  1. Hi Tina – Hope this gets to you. We just were at San Luis Obispo Lighthouse Century this past weekend – there were a ton of Fresno riders in attendance. I rode with a bunch of the B riders and we had a wonderful ride – the weather was perfect – cool and sunny – it warmed up a bit on the way back. The 65 mile route went from Morro Bay down Hwy 1 past San Simeon to Cypress Point where the elephant seals usually are – too early in the season for them to be there yet.

I rode with Mary Moore on the way back – everyone else got spread out along the way. Mary would like to attach herself to your “Travel the World Backpacking” site and be able to receive your wonderful postings. Her e-mail address is maryjmoore2000@yahoo.com Can you set her up? We haven’t heard from you for a while. How you doing? Talk to you later – Nancy Dooley
